Blog Assignment #1

In Benjimin Banneker's letter to former U.S president Thomas Jefferson he states that all humans are created equal. He argues that all humans are equal because a "father" afforded us all the same sensations and endowed us all with the same faculties. He explains how no matter where we may stand is society or religion, and no matter our difference in color that our "universal father" created us equal and that we "stand in the same relation to him." In this letter Banneker gives great detail on his beliefs and how he feels about slavery that was taking place at the time.
In the reading from The Interesting Narrative of the life of Olaudah Equiano, tells the journey of a man that was taken from his homeland and made a prisoner on a slave ship. He is separated from his sister and sent of to live life as a slave. During his experience we are able to see and feel what Equiano went through, as he is sold to different masters and sent to a slave ship. As a slave Equiano discovers new land an "acquired two or three different tongues." Equiano expresses himself with such clarity that we are able to see the different feelings such as hope, fear, sorrow and many more feelings which he encounters as a slave.
I feel that both readings are a great example of the inhuman and unjust laws that people of color had to encounter during this time in history. What makes the readings more interesting is to see the two different point of views on this issue. One is of a free man that speaks about his beliefs, thoughts and feelings, the other is of a man this is sent off to be a slave. We get both sides of the story and although both speak in a different way we can see the similarities of the issue that is taking place.

  1. Dear Richard,
You sumeerized both texts, which is great. But you didnt introduce them to your readers. Who is the authors? Plus you dont have a thesis statement: your audience doesnt know what will be your argument based on. I think you should review your paragraphs and shape the text.
Second point; your ideas are in text but they are not following an order. you shoul revise how you explain, interprate and expresse your opinion. You must be more specific.
Globaly we know what you are talking about. But your readers need to understand clearly the main idea of your essay. And they need to be able to see what it's going on because they dont know the stories. You should develope more your paragraphs and you will need to use citations to illustrate your text.
